Cyclone is an area of closed, circular fluid motion rotating in the same direction as the Earth, characterized by inward spiraling winds. Cyclones are travelling exhibitions which lead us to the threshold of circular motions that follow the rotational direction of the earth. In Forum Box the group sets up the live art installation called Dinner Party with Cyclone.
What would happen, if we start to think, that human beings are not inherently superior to other living things, in a way that encompasses all species; human, seeds, plants, animals and bacteria are part of a system of interdependence. Dinner Party with Cyclone is an interdisciplinary processes of exploring this repositioning.
While we are reaching for bridges in-between nature and mind, animal and mineral, being and matter, we might ask: What if nature would not only be considered a subject of law, but a subject that process information. According to French philosopher, Michael Serres there is something that unifies us with the inorganic elements of nature from the scientific point of view, how we understand the notion of information. It challenges the distinction between human and non-human counterparts. Serres asks: 'What do we do with information? We receive information, we emit information, we process information and we store information.' He calls us to listen what is said both by living beings and the sustainability of our planet as a whole, to look for ways to let the planet speak.
Are we able to locate ourselves to be partners of all living beings and all things on the planet...

Vanished Summer 15 and Vanished Summer 14.

In the series Vanished Summer I am inspired by the Icelandic author Gyrdir Eliasson’s texts on solitude and isolation that oscillate between the logical and the fantastic and explore the relationship between man and his surroundings. The seriesincludes photographs of Trailers in summer and winter, inscrutable pictures of nature and of unoccupied houses where man-made environment creates a frame for the imagination of the spectator.

The Search for Truth at BERG Contemporary

I have new work on view at BERG Contemporary in the exhibition The Search for Truth that opened last weekend.

In the new series of photographs I'm exploring the blurred limits of imagination and reality and how our memories tend to gradually come free of reality until something in our surroundings – an unexpected texture, a glimpse of something, or a sound – brings the past back to life. In such moments, the past takes over our body and everything becomes clear for a second, before it recedes again to rejoin the narrative of our own life.

The photographs do not merely convey information about the external reality but also mediate a poetic feeling for the world and our physical and mental experience of the passing of time. The search for truth is therefore about how we encounter reality and how this search, begun already in childhood, shapes our vision of the world and our experiences as embodied beings in a world of things and memories.

The exhibition is on view until August 3rd, for opening hours check: http://bergcontemporary.is

The EIKON Award (+45) at Künstlerhaus 1050 Vienna

The EIKON Award (+45) at Künstlerhaus 1050

On the occasion of the 100th issue of EIKON – International Magazine for Photography and Media     Art, the EIKON Award (45+) was launched under the patronage of VALIE EXPORT for European women photographers and media artists’ aged 45 and over.

The aim of the award is not only to survey the current conditions in women’s art production, but to focus on the conditions for present day production of women's art, delays in artistic development and practice for late entrants or returning artists and to make a wider public aware of them.

Following the idea of a European exchange in times of current splitting tendencies, the exhibition initiates an interdisciplinary dialogue between the three award-winning artists, SusanMacWilliam, Katrín Elvarsdóttir and Gabriele Rothemann. Thus creating a tour at whose stopping points we are constantly reminded of the unconscious, the spiritual and the (non-) transparent, which are recurring themes in the worlds of all three artists.

The EIKON Award exhibition at Künstlerhaus 1050 will be open from February 16 - April 14th 2108.

                                                       Vanished Summer 7 (2013)

"In Katrín Elvarsdóttir's Vanished Summer (2013) the interaction of man environment resides in surroundings which are natural and at the same time manmade. Organic forms and circles are repeated in the work, and between the works in the show, where the boundary between nature and humanity becomes blurred"
